We have just completed a great weekend of education, inspiration, fun and fellowship at the 9930 District Conference at the Claudelands Event Centre, Hamilton.

The venue is just along the road from the Islamic Centre for Hamilton.

All at the conference were very saddened by the events which occurred in Christchurch last Friday.

We started the official opening at 8.30am on Saturday with a minute of silence. The mayor only arrived in time to welcome all visiting Rotarians as he had been at the Mosque most of the evening in support. I ask to set up an appeal and announced that all Rotarians who wished to walk with me to the Mosque at lunchtime to show support, could do so.

About 250 walked, with me holding the RI flag. There were flowers and messages everywhere and large numbers of the public watching. At the centre, we were met by the President of the Islamic Association, the  Mayor of Hamilton Andrew King and the MP for Hamilton East David Bennett.

The President welcomed us and thank us for our support and I responded on behalf of Rotary. Then all 250 Rotarians and Muslims present linked arms in a symbolic gesture of support and togetherness. It was an extremely moving and emotional time for all.

We have raised $2400 from the conference donations and a further $550 donated by Pisey Leng, our Inspirational speaker this morning from the proceeds of her book " Holding on to Hope."

Rotary Clubs or individual Rotarians can make a donation to support the Rotary Christchurch appeal announced by District Governor Grahme Jull.

Our Rotary support was appreciated very well in Hamilton on Saturday and our continued support for those affected in Christchurch must be ongoing and strong. Like the Christchurch earthquakes from which the community has still not got over, this tragic senseless event will scar many people and families for a very long time to come.
